Kraft food packaging is made from kraft paper or board, a strong wood-fiber paper produced by the kraft pulping process, which keeps fibers long and tear resistant. What is kraft food packaging?
Kraft is a paper made by the kraft (sulfate) pulping process, which preserves long cellulose fibers and gives high tear and burst strength for its weight. In food packaging it comes in a few variants.
- Brown kraft: unbleached, natural wood color; the classic look for take-out and bakery.
- White kraft: bleached, for brighter multi-color printing.
- Recycled kraft: includes recovered fiber; used for lunch bags and pouches.
- Kraft board and corrugated kraft: thicker, rigid grades for boxes, burger clamshells and pizza boxes.

Kraft linings: PLA, PE or uncoated?
The lining, not the kraft itself, determines grease resistance and end of life. Choose it per item.
- Uncoated kraft suits dry or briefly held foods. It is recyclable where facilities exist.
- PLA-lined kraft handles grease and moisture with a plant-based film. It can be commercially compostable where industrial facilities accept it and the reference is certified to ASTM D6868, but PLA-lined paper is not curbside recyclable in most US programs.
- PE-lined paperboard gives the highest resistance to broth and condensation. It is accepted in some recycling programs; check locally.
On all three, the grease barrier comes from paper density, PLA film or PE film, not from fluorinated treatments; ask for the factory's PFAS declaration with your quote.
