What makes food packaging "eco-friendly" in 2026?
In the US and Canada, eco-friendly food packaging now has to pass three tests, not one: it must be made from renewable or recycled material, it must be free of intentionally added PFAS, and any end-of-life claim (compostable, recyclable) must be true for the buyer's local facilities. Direct Eco Green builds its food range around those three tests.
- Material — molded sugarcane bagasse, kraft paper, paperboard, bamboo, palm and vine leaves, wood, coffee grounds composites, stainless steel.
- Barrier — grease and moisture resistance comes from the molded fiber itself, a PLA or PE lining or an aqueous coating, not from fluorinated treatments. Intentionally added PFAS are banned in food packaging in New York, California, Washington, Vermont, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, Rhode Island and Hawaii.
- Claim — "compostable" requires certification to ASTM D6400 or ASTM D6868 (typically via BPI) in the US, or CAN/BNQ 0017-088 in Canada; the FTC Green Guides and California SB 343 govern what you can print.
