Bagasse is the fiber left after sugarcane is pressed for juice, molded under heat and pressure into utensils. It is food-contact safe, resists moisture and grease, and does not need a plastic coating to work with hot dishes.
Communicate end of life honestly:
- Bagasse cutlery is designed to be commercially compostable where industrial composting facilities accept it. Access to composting varies widely by city.
- Do not print unqualified "biodegradable" or "home compostable" claims; the FTC Green Guides require claims to match real disposal conditions.
- Grease resistance in molded fiber should not rely on fluorinated chemistry. Intentionally added PFAS are banned in food packaging in states including New York, California, Washington and Minnesota — ask for the factory's PFAS declaration with your quote.
